Academic Projects:

Ph.D. Project: Transdermal therapeutic systems of novel nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug Diclofenac Epolamine (DHEP) and their evaluation.

The project involved,

Preparation of semisolid formulations of a novel salt of Diclofenac (DHEP) with various penetration enhancers in carbopol gels and emulsion base.

A study of DHEP using ValiaChien and its formulations using KesharyChien diffusion cells, stability studies.

Pharmacodynamic studies of these DHEP formulations in animal models of acute as well as chronic inflammation for therapeutic relief via transdermal route.

Clinical trials of DHEP formulations in arthritis patients in Nair Hospital.

M. Pharm Project: Influence of ionizing radiations on neurohumoral transmission in rat gut.

Details:

This project was taken up to study and extrapolate a possible mechanism behind radiationinduced severe gastrointestinal disturbances like decreased GI motility, histopathology often seen in cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy.

It involved whole animal irradiation at Tata Memorial hospital and determination of radiationinduced effects on adrenergic and cholinergic neurotransmission on different postirradiation days.

C.S.I.R. fellowship project: Upgrading of raw materials used in pharmaceuticals by using radiations

The project involved,

Investigations of various microbiological counts and assay for active ingredient in medicinally active plants viz. Senna and Rauvolfia postradiation to meet the guidelines of Indian Pharmacopoeia.

Pharmacodynamic studies of these plants using animal models.

Radiation induced sterilization of plants was carried out at Isomed, BARC, Mumbai.

Professional Projects:

Successfully completed,

2 WHO funded projects on building up formulations database to detect misbranding/SALA drugs for Maharashtra, Gujarat and creating Drug Information leaflets on 25 generic drugs.

2 projects funded by DSPRUD / World Health Organization, India Country Office which involved :

o Training and sensitization of General Practitioners (GPs) on Rational Use of Drugs (RUD) as intervention to irrational prescribing using Time Series Methodology.

o Training of community pharmacists on Rational Use of Drugs (RUD) as intervention to inappropriate selfmedication practices and lack of Patient Counseling.
